Why I am writing this means because when I arrived in Canada, the first newspaper article I saw was about an Indian woman who was charged with death threats against the aide to Ontarios Premier. Later in the story it said that this woman and her husband were professionals who had to work at menial jobs because their qualifications are not recognized.
I found out about this vendetta against Mr. Heaton and after talking with many, many people got surprised to learn that unions keep qualified people out, especially if they are people of colour. What we learned is that it is not only Mr. Heaton who was taken out. The list of good people of colour who were removed one way or another is long.
The two people who were promoted into position to block any questions'or backlash were Vince Bailey on their National Executive Board and Raj Dhaliwal who was made the Human Rights Director.
These two did a lot of damage that is still being experienced in this Union. Plus they filled positions in various Locals with people like themselves. People who will look the other way to preserve their own status and privilege.
Before, I always thought it was companies who discriminated against Indians and others.
So I am talking about this as a Buyer Beware for those who want to join a union in Canada.
The lesson from this is that you could be attached to a Local like this and you too will suffer like this. CAWs Constitution allows guys like these to operate for a very long time. There are no guidelines for decent behaviour. Anything goes as long as it's against non-white people who are told it's just politics.
Don't worry about seniority or any union stuff like that. It will not apply to you, specially if ypu are a non-white.
If you are non-white you are automatically junior to any white male.
Everyone else is automatically to those related to a union official.
